Connect Via Bieber

Safety and Connection

These two topics have been on my Brain a lot over the past 6 years.  They stem back from Childhood but progressed through the later stages.  These are two things that we focus in on at the gym.  Physical safety with lifts but more important to me emotional safety.  Emotional safety in conversations we have, how we treat one another, transparency and vulnerability.  Making the new person feel welcome and encouraging him or her through the workout.  Helping the person who feels scared to connect with a list of silly questions like
"What is your favorite cereal?"
or
"Have you heard the new Justin Bieber?"
Conversations quickly become a way to connect and make people feel safe.  Connection to me is a big deal in recovery because we can not do this deal alone.  The fitness, art, nutrition and service are four areas in which we can organically connect.  In class it's not about how much weight you lift but the fact that you showed up, walked through fear and met someone new.  I'm a firm believer in needing a vehicle to connect rather then sayin' Hi how are you? where are you from? whats your drug of Choice?
